Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar

Ever tried German Beer? Its known to be one of the smoothest beer around. I remember going for a EuroTrip, and when we were in Germany, my parents and aunty tried the German Beer and true enough, they said it was really smooth. Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to drink back then, *daddy's little girl*, so I didn't know how smooth it was. But there's no need to fret, you do not have to go all the way to Germany to get German beer now. They have it in Malaysia too. And the one place that serves good German Beer would be -

Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar

Weissbrau specializes in German Cuisine, that serves pork specialties.

A while back I was invited to attend Weissbrau German Bistro & Bar's launching of their new menu. Who would miss a chance of having to try out a new menu of German Cuisine and free flow of German Beer.

I was recommended to try the
Leffe Blonde
It contains Vieux Temps yeast which gives the clove-like flavour. Personally, I thought this beer was mild and I happen to like it that way. It has that sweet after taste which makes it all the better.

There was variety of beer that was being served that night. Not only that, there were even shots for us to try. After enjoying the Leffe Blonde, we then decided to try some wine. Ordered a glass and white and red white. I very much preferred the white wine because it gave a sweet sensation at first taste and left on a good after taste. The red wine however, wasn't chilled. It was rather warm, and I didn't like it that way. I always prefer my wine chilled, and if wine isn't chilled at least the wine glass is. Its all personal preference.

Ever heard the phrase,
"never drink on an empty stomach"
We were served buffet styled dinner.
Served on the buffet table was two different kind of soup, a variety of different salad, pork that was cook in many different ways and the section that I would most look forward to would be the dessert section.

One dish that really stood out to me was the Schnitzel. I really enjoyed this dish, and if I happen to go back, I would order this without second thoughts.
The pork inside was soft lean meat, and to top it off with a crispy and crunchy coat made it all simply scrumptious.

I have to say that many of the other food was not up to expectation. Most of them were rather dry for my liking. The burger looked good, but it wasn't served as a whole, therefore when people started taking the burger, the tray got rather messy. Patties were out, vegetable was all over the place. So, lets just say that I wasn't able to try the burger as a whole to have a proper comment on it. Each ingredient that was placed in the burger was suppose to compliment one another, and I guess if one ingredient is missing, it changes a lot.

Other than that, I really did not like the way we were placed to have our meals. There were definitely more than 20 people who attended the food review, but as much as I can remember, there were only  2 round tables that was placed at our section. I might be wrong about the amount of tables but one thing for sure was that there were not enough space for us to feel comfortable. We had to squeeze close enough to feel awkward to have our meals. From time to time, I had to turn around to say sorry to the girl beside me because I kept nudging her while eating. Most of us had to hold onto our plates as there were no space to place it down. Those lucky ones that were standing at the side (in front of the kitchen), had some (limited) amount of space to place their plates down (some better than none). We were served with pork knuckles and other dishes (with bones) that requires a table, just so we'll be able to cut into the food without making a mess or using our fingers. Speaking of which, many of those dishes requires us using a knife as well, and there was no knife being served on the buffet table. It really didn't make much sense, we were only served with spoons and forks. It isn't easy to cut into meat with only spoons and forks. Forks and spoons are not meant to cut into meat.

I'm known for really enjoying having my meals at places with good service. It really does frustrate me when I happen to see places with bad services. One way I look at this is that the waiters and anyone working there for that matter, from a manager, right down to a part time waiter/waitress has to at least enjoy what they're doing. A smile from them, goes a long way, especially to clients and customers. Waiters and waitresses that was serving us that night, had a rather dull face on. No smiles, no welcomes to thank yous that were given, no attempts to check if were wanted more drink orders. One perfect example that I saw that night was when the shots were being served. The waiter that was serving the shots were just merely standing at one side, as though he was waiting for us to approach him for a shot. Fair enough, he handed out shots to people that actually approached him, but why is it that the customer be the one who approaches? The least he could have done was walk around, that way, I wouldn't even mind approaching, but just standing there was not acceptable.

Don't get me wrong, I know that this was only a food review, and we were only suppose to write about the food. But there's so many other factors that should be taken into consideration when it comes to enjoying a meal. As perfect as a dish can be, as orgasmic the food can taste, if the environment doesn't allow costumers to feel comfortable, it simply just effects the dish then. Isn't that a waste? Especially things mentioned above can all be controlled? Hospitality plays much a big role, it keeps loyal customers, loyal.

Apple Strudel (left)
Lets just say I've tasted better Apple Strudels. Maybe because when they served it, it was slightly soggy.

Chocolate Mousse
Cheese Mousse with Liquor

The other dessert were alright. I enjoyed the Cheese Mousse with Liquor. Personal Preference, I enjoy cheese.

 Mad Sally
They had a live band on that night to keep us entertained. They were not bad but I will not say good either. I've seen better bands, ones that would get the crowd really going. Maybe if they tried to make a connection with everyone there, it would have been better. Also maybe the timing was not right. Maybe starting a little later than they did would have been good. Cause it was really crowded, and it wasn't easy to get the food with them playing at the same time. Made the place look stuffy. But, I did tap my feet along to their music.

Overall, the night could have been much better. The beer and wine was good, the Schnitzel was mouth watering, and as for others, much more room for improvement.

agree with what you have written Carmen.. i guess the limited space that day was due to the fact they only allocated a small area for the menu launch while the other areas were for walk-in customers.

Haha, thanks. I mean, they could have given us a better place la. I kept hitting Janice while eating you know. =( I felt so bad. They want us to review them, and give good comments, they have to give us something good to write about right. I mean its us who's spreading the words that night, not the walk in customers.
